Country with no record of cholera deaths in the last 24 hours

Angola has not recorded any deaths from cholera in the last 24 hours, a period in which 197 cases were reported, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

:

The last time the country recorded no deaths due to the disease was on 12 May, marking a relief in an epidemic that has already claimed 718 lives and more than 24,500 confirmed cases since January.

The province of Namibe continues to lead with 92 new cases in the last 24 hours, followed by Cuanza Sul (45), Luanda (19) and Huíla (15). The fatality rate has fallen to 2.9 percent.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, Luanda has been the most affected province with 6,785 cases and 217 deaths, followed by Benguela (4,690 cases and 108 deaths) and Bengo (3,037 cases and 119 deaths). The current cholera epidemic, the most serious in the country in several years, was detected on 7 January.

Cholera is associated with conditions of poverty, lack of basic sanitation and scarcity of drinking water.

It is an acute intestinal infection caused by the ingestion of contaminated food or water, characterized by severe diarrhea and rapid dehydration.

The disease can be fatal if not treated promptly, so rapid access to rehydration treatments and, in severe cases, antibiotics is essential.
