The BNA's statement comes in the wake of several complaints from internet users that have been circulating in recent days, complaining about the refusal of low-value coins for paying for taxis or commercial transactions in informal markets and street vendors.
Speaking to the weekly Novo Jornal, the president of the National Association of Taxi Drivers of Angola, Rafael Inácio, confirmed the existence of complaints, calling on members to distance themselves from this stance.
This Wednesday, the BNA published a statement on its website clarifying that eight denominations of coins with values between 0.50 kwanzas and 200 kwanzas remain in circulation.
These coins "continue to be legal tender and have the power to release payments in the country, and should be accepted by all economic agents in commercial exchanges", stressed the Angolan regulator.
According to the BNA, the rejection of coins without just cause is punishable by a fine of 30 to 180 days (the amount of each day is determined by the court), appealing to economic agents to observe "strict compliance with the law".
