According to Rádio Nacional de Angola, the heavy vehicle was transporting sand and lost its brakes after colliding with a convenience store.
The second police commander in the municipality, chief inspector Sandra Gonçalves, confirmed the deaths and pointed to excessive speed and loss of brakes as possible causes of the accident.
A witness, Simão José, quoted by the Angop news agency, stated that all the victims were in the truck and ended up buried under the load of sand.
Ana Constantino, another witness, said that the truck was coming from the Alto Bimbe commune at high speed and before colliding with the establishment, it ran over two oxen.
The spokesperson for INEMA, the institution that provided assistance to the injured, Serafim Mundombe, stated that one of the survivors is in a critical condition and is being treated at the central hospital in Lubango.
The municipality of Humpata is 22 kilometers from Lubango, on the border between Huíla and Namibe.
