The BPC's clarification follows the sanctioning process initiated by the central bank which resulted in a fine of around 530 thousand dollars (493 thousand euros) for offenses related to money laundering.

The BPC recognizes the shortcomings, but said, in a statement, that measures were applied to mitigate the impact of the aforementioned shortcomings, highlighting the fact that no incident has been reported, in the last five years, related to money laundering and terrorist financing in operations carried out by BPC customers.

The banking institution also adds that these shortcomings are mainly of a technological nature, which the state bank wants to resolve definitively, implementing initiatives such as the IT System Modernization Program and the Information Quality Recovery Program, approved by the shareholders and whose implementation is to be monitored by the BNA.

On Wednesday, the regulator announced that it had applied financial sanctions to BPC and Banco Caixa Angola as a result of processes initiated under the Inspection Plan for Banking Financial Institutions.

The infractions refer to the year 2021 and were registered "in the context of preventing and combating money laundering".
