In a presentation to the United Nations Security Council (UN) of the Semiannual Report on the UN Regional Office for Central Africa (Unoca), Abarry indicated that he has observed the preference given by most states in the region to dialogue to resolve peacefully Tensions, giving as an example the conversations between the Presidents of the Central African Republic and Chad about the revitalization of cooperation between the two countries.
"In this regard, I greet the eminently positive role played by Angola President João Lourenço, 'Champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa', to facilitate the process of standardization between the two countries that in particular led to Transfer from former president [Central African] François Bozizé do Chad to Guinea-Bissau", said the UN representative.
Among the advances in the region, Abarry referred special attention to the participation and political representation of women in key positions, namely with the appointment of women as vice president in Gabon and Angola, and a prime minister at Guinea Equatorial.
Also in Sao Tome and Principe, the UN envoy said he saw from the country's authorities determined to implement a reform in the sectors of justice and security in the face of the "unfortunate events of last November" - when an attack on the barracks of the Army, with four dead - "thus confirming the will of this country of facing the structural problems that threaten their peace and stability through the reform of security and justice sectors."
"In a completely different plane, it is unfortunate to see the persistence of human rights violations, in particular freedom of expression, in some countries of this African subregion," said the United Nations representative.
In his speech to the diplomatic corps, Abdou Abarry assessed that the coming months will represent a "important turning point" to Central Africa, where crucial political and electoral processes should occur by the end of the year.
"We will ensure, with the valuable support of the Security Council, that the episodes of violence, fed in particular by the hate speech, which marked the elections in the past are avoided at all costs. The peace and stability of this subregion are in game", he said.
Also the ambassador Gilberto da Piedade Veríssimo, chairman of the Central African Economic Community Commission (CEEAC), spoke at the meeting, where he recognized that, despite the "very positive" signs observed in the region, the region also faces significant security challenges.
Among the problems pointed out are the persistent action of armed groups and terrorist movements, transfronty combat, unlawful circulation of weapons, crimes at sea, illicit exploitation of natural resources, intercommunity conflicts, humanitarian crises produced by armed conflicts, natural disasters and political-diplomatic tensions.
Given the various problems that Central Africa faces, UK ambassador to the UN, James Kariuki, gave special attention to the situation in Chad, appealing to the transition authorities that honor the conditions established in the African Union's Council and Security Council statement May 2023, and expressed concern about the response to the demonstrations of last October, which caused dozens of dead.
"The United Kingdom encourages transition authorities to work with Unoca and CEEAC to ensure the accountability and release of the detained protesters without due process of law," he said.
Kariuki also thanked Chad's generosity to help host tens of thousands of refugees escape the crisis in Sudan and indicated that the United Kingdom is providing more than three million dollars in humanitarian assistance to help support these refugees.
"We encourage Chad's transition authorities to use their influence with the generals of Sudan to encourage adherence to ceasefire, facilitate humanitarian access and progress towards a peaceful resolution for this crisis," said the diplomat British.
A similar position was defended by US ambassador Robert Wood, who took the opportunity to condemn all attacks on civilians in Cameroon and to ask for the end of violence in the country.
