Judicial Council appoints convicted judge to Supreme Court counselor

The Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ) appointed Carlos Cavuquila, convicted in a case involving public funds, as a judge advisor to the Supreme Court, according to a resolution published in Diário da República.

:

Carlos Cavuquila, member of the CSMJ, had previously been nominated as vice-president of the jury of a curricular competition for the recruitment of five judges of the Court of Auditors, but was stopped, in May, by a deliberation of the plenary of this body.

According to the decision, Carlos Cavuquila has two cases pending, one of which has become final, in which he was sentenced to return to the State more than 29 million kwanzas, which is still in execution, and another, which is still undergoing procedures, involving approximate values of 1.4 billion kwanzas and 177 million kwanzas, respectively.

According to the resolution, consulted by Lusa, the CSMJ plenary decided to appoint Carlos Cavuquila to fill the vacancy of advisory judge, reserved for jurists of merit "because he is the candidate immediately after the final graduation list" of the curricular competition to fill eight vacancies for counselor judges, with one vacancy still open.

Carlos Cavuquila, who was administrator of the municipality of Cacuaco, in Luanda, is currently a member of the CSMJ, a body chaired by judge Joel Leonardo, also president of the Supreme Court and which has been at the center of several controversies, associated with suspicions of selling sentences, mismanagement and nepotism.
