João Lourenço was speaking at the end of a visit to the headquarters of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), in Lisbon, his first visit and at a time when Angola assumes the rotating presidency of the organization.

Asked by journalists about the way in which he is following the evolution of José Eduardo dos Santos' health, the head of state said that he is doing so "very closely".

"We can say that the situation is worrying. Only the medical teams will be able to provide more information," he said.

In this regard, he said that this Wednesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, traveled to Barcelona in order to monitor the state of health of the former President.

João Lourenço guaranteed that "contact with the family [of José Eduardo dos Santos] exists", reacting to criticism that he will not be in contact with family members.

José Eduardo dos Santos is hospitalized in a clinic in Barcelona and is in a coma after having suffered a fall and after having recovered from a covid-19 infection. The former President has been in intensive care for a few days at the Teknon Medical Center in Barcelona, Spain, in an induced coma.

The 79-year-old former President has had health problems for several years and has been accompanied in Barcelona since 2006.

At this press conference, João Lourenço also praised the role of the CPLP and, when asked about the organization's alleged irrelevance in terms of human rights, said: "It's not fair. The CPLP has done a lot in terms of human rights."

The head of state also said that he hoped that at the end of the organization's Angolan presidency, within a year, "the CPLP will be closer to achieving its goals" and find itself "in the place it deserves".
