João Lourenço in Lisbon to participate in the United Nations Conference on the Oceans

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, traveled this Sunday to Lisbon with a view to participating in the United Nations Conference on the Oceans.

According to a note from the Presidency of the Republic, the head of state, who is accompanied by the first lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, arrived at the end of this Sunday afternoon in the Portuguese capital.

Another presidency statement reveals that on Sunday night, the head of state, accompanied by the first lady, participated in a welcome dinner offered by the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The President is in Portugal to participate, as of this Monday, in the II Ocean Conference.

According to Angop, on the sidelines of the conference, João Lourenço will meet with some important figures, such as Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and António Guterres, UN secretary general. In addition, he will also visit the headquarters of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries and give an interview to Rádio Televisão Portuguesa (RTP).

More than 7000 people, including representatives from 140 countries, some at the highest level, will participate from this Monday in the event - which will run until Friday, July 1st, under the motto "Save the Oceans, Protect the Future".

The event – ​​which takes place five years after its first edition took place in New York – is organized by Portugal together with Kenya and will bring together politicians, including 25 heads of state and government and a hundred ministers, at least 38 specialized agencies and international organizations, nearly 1200 non-governmental organizations and other entities, more than 400 companies and one hundred and a half universities.

Topics will be discussed such as combating marine pollution, promoting and strengthening sustainable ocean-based economies, managing and conserving marine and coastal ecosystems, minimizing ocean acidification, deoxygenation and warming, making fisheries sustainable, increasing scientific knowledge and technology. marine life, improve the sustainable use of the oceans, and enhance the links between Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 (protect marine life) and other Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
