Elections: PR says he is always available for dialogue but rejects pacts

João Lourenço said this Friday that he does not shy away from dialogue with his opponents, but rejected the idea of pre-election pacts, arguing that what has more force is “the Constitution and the law”.

:

"I believe I have already proved that I do not shy away from dialogue, I talk to everyone", said João Lourenço, in a press conference with 12 media that lasted about two hours.

The chief executive said that dialogue has taken place, throughout his term, with political parties, civil society or religious leaders, guaranteeing that he receives "general rule" in his office all people who ask for an audience.

Asked about the possibility of signing a pact to ease pre-election tensions, João Lourenço says he received correspondence from an opposition party at two different times that made this proposal in writing, which he considered unnecessary.

"From the analysis I made of that proposal, it smelled like a government of unity and national reconciliation, something that happened decades ago. We already had it, today we don't need it", stressed the President.

He also considered that agreeing to make a pact with one of the parties would also mean disregarding the others with parliamentary seats and disrespecting the will of voters who chose a parliamentary majority for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

"It is strange that those who come to make these proposals are those who say they are in the best position to win the elections with greater ease. So what do you need this pact for?", he questioned, referring that "a regime pact has no more force than the Constitution and the law".

Regarding the elections scheduled for August 24, he stated that "they are a great challenge" and that "there are no easy victories".

"Only those who actually work win, those who study every day have good results, those who only open the book because they have a test tomorrow are doomed to failure", he continued.

The head of state said that he has "work to present", despite the country having lived two and a half years with the covid-19 pandemic, which negatively influenced the fulfillment of some promises.

On the other hand, he emphasized, "there are many important projects that have been completed and were not included in the program presented five years ago". "We are confident that we have fulfilled our obligation", stressed João Lourenço, explaining that he will run again because the Constitution allows for a second term and wants to "continue to serve the Angolan people".

João Lourenço made a positive assessment of his five years in office and pointed out, among the priorities of a new term, should he win the elections scheduled for 24 August, the conclusion of an ambitious plan worth US$4.5 billion to minimize the effects of drought in the south, as well as improvements in the country's electrification, using clean energy and road rehabilitation.

In the interview, the President also addressed the investments made in the area of health, in terms of infrastructure and human resources and announced that Angola will once again have a university hospital and will build a new military hospital, among other hospital facilities to be rehabilitated or built.

"I don't know if any country can, in such a short space of time, make as big an investment as we did", commented the head of state.

He also spoke about the financial resources allocated to the Integrated Plan for Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM), stressing that they all originate from the Sovereign Fund of Angola and resulted from the recovery of assets that were abroad.

"The source that is feeding [the PIIM] is just one, there are no other sources. We did not seek resources elsewhere", he guaranteed, stating that he is already thinking about a PIIM 2.
