João Lourenço: Justice was only after the “chicken thieves” for years

President João Lourenço stated that political power does not condition the freedom of action of the courts in Angola, which are no longer “gaged” and only pursue “chicken thieves”.

João Lourenço, who gave a press conference this Thursday to 12 national media, said that he does not intend to give up the fight against corruption and that there is still "much to recover".

He said that today there is a "completely different" picture of justice that for many years "was only after chicken thieves", which has changed from one day to the next since he was elected in 2017.

"If we are to analyze, above all, the cases that have passed through the Supreme Court, it is a new reality that was previously unthinkable. It was unthinkable that certain figures could sit on the bar of the courts", he underlined.

For the President of the Republic, "this only demonstrates that the courts have much more independence and freedom of action, otherwise they would continue to be muzzled by the political power that would say 'don't mess with here, don't mess with there' or 'don't mess with this or that'".

"Political power is not acting like this, our justice has all the freedom to act", he underlined, pointing to the Lussati case, which involved figures linked to his Military House, as an example of non-interference.

"In the case of the looting that involved figures from the Casa Militar itself, no one ever thought that the political power would let justice move forward with this case and this case is not forgotten, it is not frozen, it will come to public very soon and then, be it whatever God wants", said the chief executive, guaranteeing the firm intention to fight corruption, regardless of who the targets are.

"Justice is not being selective, it is knocking at the door of those who have the presumption that there is a crime until proven otherwise", he reinforced.
