Covid-19: death toll in Africa rises to 8334 in over 315,000 cases

The number of deaths in Africa due to covid-19 has risen to 8334, an additional 219 in the last 24 hours, in about 315,000 cases, according to the latest data on the pandemic on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected is 315,410, plus 8843 cases in the last 24 hours.

The number recovered is 149,982, plus 3770.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases (106,065) and accounts for 2041 deaths, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most infected in the entire continent (101,590) and with 1991 fatalities.

North Africa leads in the number of deaths (3513) and in 83,444 infections.

West Africa accounts for 1154 deaths out of 63,529 infections, East Africa for 958 deaths and 31,912 cases, while Central Africa has 668 deaths out of 30,460 infections.

Egypt, the African country with the most deaths, now has 2278 deaths and 56,809 cases of infection, followed by South Africa and then Algeria with 852 deaths and 11,920 infections.

Among the five countries most affected are Nigeria, with 525 dead and 20,919 infected, and Ghana, with 85 deaths from 14,154 infections.

As for the Lusophone African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections and deaths, with 1556 cases and 19 deaths.

Cape Verde has 944 infections and eight deaths and Mozambique has 737 infected patients and five deaths.

São Tomé e Príncipe has 702 cases and 12 deaths and Angola has 186 confirmed cases of covid-19 and ten deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has passed the two thousand cases (2001) and maintains 32 deaths, according to Africa CDC.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed over 469,000 lives and infected almost 9 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
