Covid-19: Number of deaths in Africa almost in the seven thousand in more than 259 thousand cases

The number of deaths per covid-19 in Africa has risen to nearly 7,000, up 230 in the last 24 hours, in about 259,000 cases, according to the latest data on the pandemic on the continent.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of deaths rose from 6769 to 6999, while the number of infected rose from 251,866 to 259,036, plus 7170.

The number recovered is 118,472, plus 4164.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases, with 80,000 (80,098) - and 1661 dead - this Wednesday, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most cases across the continent (76,334) and where there are 1,625 fatalities.

North Africa continues to lead in total deaths: 2918, accounting for 71,583 infections.

West Africa passed this Wednesday the barrier of a thousand dead (1009) in 53,812 infected, East Africa has 853 deaths and 28,088 cases, while in Central Africa there are 558 deaths in 25,455 infections.

Egypt is the country with the most dead (1766) in 47,856 infections, followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 788 fatalities and 11,147 infected.

Among the five countries most affected are Nigeria, with 455 dead and 17,148 infected, and Ghana, with 58 deaths from 12,193 infections.

As for the lusophone African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections and deaths, with 1492 cases, registering 15 fatalities.

Cape Verde has 782 infections and seven deaths and São Tomé e Príncipe accounts for 671 cases and 12 deaths.

Mozambique has 638 infected patients and four dead and Angola has 148 confirmed cases of covid-19 and six dead.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 1664 cases and 32 deaths, according to the latest report by the government of that country.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 438,000 lives and infected more than eight million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
