Covid-19: death toll in Africa rises to 6769 in almost 252,000 cases

The number of deaths per covid-19 in Africa has risen to 6769, plus 305 in the last 24 hours, in almost 252,000 cases, according to the latest data on the pandemic on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected rose from 242,105 to 251,866, up 9761 in the last 24 hours.

The number of those recovered is 114,308, plus 4331.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases (77,230) - and 1603 deaths - the vast majority being concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most cases in the entire continent (73,553) and where there are 1568 fatalities.

North Africa continues to lead the total number of deaths: 2811, accounting for 69,669 infections.

West Africa has 966 deaths out of 52,511 infections, East Africa has 838 deaths and 27,353 cases, while Central Africa has 551 deaths out of 25,103 infections.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (1672) in 46,289 infections, followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 777 deaths and 11,031 infected.

Among the five most affected countries is also Nigeria, with 424 deaths and 16,658 infected, and Ghana, with 54 deaths from 11,964 infections.

As for the Lusophone African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections and deaths, with 1492 cases, with 15 deaths.

Cape Verde has 759 infections and six deaths and Sao Tome and Principe has 659 cases and 12 deaths.

Mozambique has 609 infected patients and three deaths and Angola has 142 confirmed cases of covid-19 and six deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 1664 cases and 32 deaths, according to the latest report by the government of that country.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed over 434,000 lives and infected almost eight million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
