Interior Minister, Eugénio Laborinho, announced this Thursday that he is working towards the completion of six prisons, noting that the structures will make it possible to "reduce prison overcrowding".

The country currently has 23,000 detainees, nine thousand of whom are in pre-trial detention and the remainder are sentenced.

According to the governor, the prison units under construction in the provinces of Luanda, Kwanza Sul, Malanje and Huambo, will allow for the decongestion of prison establishments because "we need to pay special attention to the prison situation of citizens.

"With the completion of these detention centers, we will have greater prison capacity and we will be able to transfer some convicted citizens to these places, thus allowing us to reduce prison overcrowding," the minister said.

Eugénio Laborinho was speaking this Thursday at the opening of a meeting with prosecutors at the Ministry of the Interior's Central Executive Services, which addresses, among several issues, the situation of criminal legality and the high number of pre-trial detention.
