“Zenu” dos Santos trial resumed on June 30 for final allegations

The trial of the so-called “500 million” case, which involves the son of the ex-President and ex-president of the Sovereign Fund of Angola, “Zenu” dos Santos, and a former governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA), will be restarted Next tuesday.

According to an order to which Lusa had access, dated 22 June and signed by the judge presiding over the collective, João Pitra, the trial involving the son of José Eduardo dos Santos, the former governor of BNA, Valter Filipe , the director of the reserve management department of the institution, António Bule Manuel, and businessman Jorge Gaudens Sebastião, will be resumed with the parties' allegations.

Initially, the final allegations of the trial on the alleged improper transfer of US $ 500 million from the National Bank of Angola abroad were scheduled for March 25, but the court postponed the session, undated, due to contingency measures meanwhile adopted to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

The last session of the trial started on 9 December 2019 took place on 10 March.

Defendants Valter Filipe and António Bule Manuel are accused of crimes of embezzlement, fraud for defrauding and money laundering.

The case dates back to 2017, when Jorge Gaudens Pontes Sebastião presented the son of the former head of state with a proposal for financing strategic projects for the country, which he forwarded to the executive, as he was not part of the portfolio of the Sovereign Fund. of Angola.

The objective was to create a Strategic Investment Fund that would raise US $ 35 billion for the country.

The deal involved as a "precedent condition", according to a government statement issued in April 2018, which announced the recovery of the US $ 500 million, the US $ 1,500 million capitalization by Angola, plus a payment of 33 million euros for setting up financing structures.

As a result, two agreements were signed between BNA and Mais Financial Services, a company owned by Jorge Gaudens Pontes Sebastião, a longtime friend of co-defendant José Filomeno dos Santos, to set up the financing operation, which took place in August 2017 , $ 500 million was transferred to PerfectBit's account, "contracted by the promoters of the operation", for the purpose of custody of the funds to be structured.

On this process, the former President of Angola, José Eduardo dos Santos, as a witness, confirmed that it was under his guidance that Valter Filipe, then governor of BNA, acted, "all in the public interest".
