Angola before the portuguese. Filmmaker wants history of pre-colonialisation on big screen

Manuel Terramoto, filmmaker and professor specialized in Angolan History, wants to tell this same story - before the time of the colonies - in the cinema. To do so, he is developing a documentary about the kingdoms that existed in the territory the Portuguese had not yet arrived in Angola.

:

The aim of the documentary is to report on the appearance of the Kingdom of Congo, Matamba and Ndongo, before Portugal arrived in Angola, and thus demystify some of the beliefs that exist regarding these kingdoms, he explained.

"When we talk about the history of Angola, we limit ourselves to the arrival of the Portuguese, as well as slavery, but history began long before they arrived in the country. That's the part that interests me, that I've been working on now. Like ancient Greece, we also have our myths," he said in a statement to the newspaper Opaís.

For now Manuel Terramoto is writing the script for the documentary, based on research and scientific work done by Angolan scientists on the country before the time of the colonies.

The filmmaker also explained that before the kingdoms were created, there were already small societies that had religious beliefs, since they spoke of God. However, the lack of records from that time makes it "difficult to tell the century in which this happened".

However, "it is that part of the story that I find interesting, as it has never been portrayed in a book or in a film. I am interested in portraying the life of Angolans before the existence of Angola, the life of Angolans before the arrival of Europeans and other discoveries", he justified.

According to the same newspaper, Manuel Terramoto has already thought everything through for the recording and making of the documentary. However, the filmmaker complains about the lack of support, admitting that this could be a problem for the production to progress in the coming months.

Moreover, due to the presence of covid-19, the teacher does not believe that the recordings will start before the end of the year or in the first months of 2021.

"If I had funding from the state or from interested organisations, I would be working more quickly, with several teams and the film would be developed in eight months at the most. As I'm struggling with my limited means, this drags production out for a long time," he stressed.
