João Lourenço in India for the first time to sign agreements and boost business

The President of the Republic begins his first state visit to India this Saturday, at the invitation of his Indian counterpart, where he will sign memorandums of understanding and agreements aimed at boosting bilateral relations, the Presidency announced.

The Head of State arrived in the Indian capital, New Delhi, on Friday morning.

The President's visit to the Asian country includes a meeting with the Indian President, Draupadi Murmu, and talks with the country's Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, on 3 May.

Also on Saturday, João Loureço will pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by visiting his memorial, where, in addition to laying a wreath, he will sign the guest book.

João Lourenço's visit will end on 4 May, according to a statement from the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighting that it will take place in the year in which the two States celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations and at the invitation of President Draupadi Murmu.

On the last day of the official visit, the President will participate in a business event in New Delhi, with the aim of promoting investment and trade ties between the two countries.

“India and Angola enjoy warm and friendly relations built over the years. Our bilateral relations are underpinned by a vibrant energy partnership. And bilateral trade between the two countries has grown to reach US$4.1 billion in 2023-2024,” the Indian ministry said.

The partnership for development, cooperation for capacity building and the defence relationship “have also expanded” between Angola and India, it highlighted, adding that the two countries “support each other’s candidatures in various multilateral forums, including the UN”.

“Several memoranda of understanding/agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, which will give a boost to bilateral relations” between the two countries, the statement reads.

João Lourenço will visit India accompanied by a “high-level” delegation, including several ministers, senior officials and business leaders.
