Nurses warn of the need to transform the health sector and value the practice of the profession

“The shortage of human and material resources, the lack of professional recognition and appreciation, the constant need to update skills and the absence of structured mechanisms for career progression are the main challenges currently faced by nurses in Angola, and beyond, and it is necessary for health institutions, regulatory bodies and nursing leaders to create more favourable conditions for the exercise of the profession”, defended Daniela Campos, Nursing Director at Aliva, within the scope of the III Nursing Conference, held this Monday, in Luanda.

Under the motto 'Leadership, Innovation and Sustainability in Nursing', the event brought together 70 professionals in a space for strategic reflection and sharing of experiences between nursing leaders and managers, reinforcing the identity of nursing leadership and presenting concrete solutions to real challenges.

"The choice of the event's theme arose from the urgent need to strengthen the strategic role of nurses in a health system that is constantly evolving. If leadership is essential to transforming realities in services, innovation drives safer, more efficient and humane practices, and sustainability guarantees the continuity of quality care, even in the face of economic and structural challenges", said Aliva's Nursing Director, highlighting that the theme of the conferences also served as "an invitation to collective action, calling on professionals to take their place in transformation".

Regarding the role of leadership in nursing, Daniela Campos argues that it is the "driving force behind quality, safety and humanisation of care", since "an effective leader inspires teams, promotes active listening, facilitates clinical decision-making and ensures alignment with good practices".

As for innovation in nursing practice, she believes that it is not limited to technology or the instruments used, but also resides in the critical and creative capacity of professionals to rethink the way of providing care, that is, to question what has always been done in the same way, adapt to people's real needs, anticipate problems and propose solutions that humanise care, optimise resources and improve results.

"Innovation also means transforming routines into more meaningful, safe and effective care experiences, in which the nurse stops being just an executor and becomes an active protagonist of change in healthcare", she said.

Recruitment, motivation and retention of professionals was another of the topics highlighted at the event and, among the main solutions for retaining and motivating nursing talent, Daniela Campos pointed out "the promotion of a balance between personal and professional life, investment in continuous training and clinical leadership, professional recognition and fair pay, the creation of safe and collaborative work environments, and the implementation of transparent career plans and opportunities for progression".

"Retaining and motivating talent requires a holistic approach, more than material benefits, so it is essential to cultivate a sense of belonging and purpose, in which nurses feel an active part in building a better health system", she concluded.

Promoted by Aliva Saúde, the Nursing Conferences are training and knowledge-sharing events, which aim to promote a debate on the challenges and opportunities of the sector and an exchange of experiences between nurses, leaders and nursing managers.
