Angola records more than 300 cases of cholera in just one day

Angola has registered more than 300 cases of cholera and four deaths in one day, accumulating 23,143 infections and 693 deaths since January, according to data released by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) for Tuesday.

The previous time that more than 300 infections had been reported in a single day was on April 29.

In Tuesday's data, the Ministry of Health announced that in the last 24 hours, 311 cases were registered, the majority in Namibe province (170).

The new cases reported were spread beyond Namibe province (170) in the provinces of Cuanza Sul (64), Huíla (20), Luanda (18), Icolo and Bengo (nine), Lunda Norte (eight), Cabinda (eight), Cuanza Norte (five), Benguela (four), Malanje (two), Zaire (one), Cubango (one) and Bengo (one), with the deaths registered in Namibe (two) and Cuanza Sul (two).

Since the start of this epidemic, declared by the government on January 7 of this year and affecting 18 of the 21 provinces, a total of 23,143 cases and 693 deaths have been recorded, with a fatality rate of 3.0 percent, with the province of Luanda, the country's capital and epicenter of the disease, leading the number of infections (6,706) and deaths (216).

During the period under analysis, 325 people were discharged and 352 others remain hospitalized.
