Maximum sentence of eight years in prison for crimes of rape of minors approved by parliamentarians

António Paulo, president of the first Committee of the National Assembly, made it known – at the joint meeting, in the specialty that aims to discuss the revision of the penal code, in a proposal that will position the country in accordance with the international standards currently in force – that, this Thursday, deputies reached an agreement on the maximum sentence of eight years in prison for crimes of sexual abuse of minors.

On the other hand, he added that a minimum sentence of three years in prison was defined so that offenders would not be able to ask to pay a deposit and, thus, be released on provisional release, writes Angop.

In turn, deputy Fernando Diniz argued that the penal framework should be more severe in order to discourage offenders. However, António Paulo responded that the idea of reviewing the law is related to the fact that some rules will have a minimum criminal framework and will not be aggravated.

This Thursday, on the parliamentarians' discussion table was also article 305 of the penal code, which concerns dangerous driving of transport, whose focus was around the citizen's right to refrain from producing evidence against themselves, writes Angop.

In this area, Marcy Lopes, Minister of Justice, left the suggestion that the driver should be subject to an alcohol test whenever requested, under penalty of committing the crime of disobedience. Furthermore, he also defended the change of the alcohol level, currently set at one milligram per liter, to 1.2 grams per liter, in an attempt to rectify a writing error that exists and agree with the current highway code.

According to Angop, which cites a note from the National Assembly, it is scheduled for next Tuesday, the discussion, in general, of the proposed laws on the institutionalization of local authorities, municipal guards, changes to passports, anti-doping in sport, as well as the draft resolution and joint opinions on the constitution of the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
