After a meeting with the American Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, João Ernesto dos Santos said that Angola is interested in promoting African defense and security policies to achieve peace, stability, cohesion and deepening of African projects.

"Therefore, Angola is focused on promoting an agenda of preventing and resolving conflicts through peaceful means and interstate dialogue," said the government official, quoted in a statement released this Wednesday.

The acquisition of a state-of-the-art machine building system, acquisition of transport and logistics vehicles, a bridge system, a fleet of light tactical vehicles and the acquisition of aircraft are also among the Government's intentions.

The President, João Lourenço, previously expressed his intention to reinforce the country's defense sector with North American equipment.

Lloyd Austin, who visited Angola in September 2023, said, in the meeting with his Angolan counterpart, that Angola is a "strategic partner" and a regional leader and that the United States "deeply values" the "increasingly closer" ties with African countries.

Citing Joe Biden's statements at the US-Africa Leaders Summit in 2022, the head of the Pentagon said that Africa's success is the world's success.

"Since that summit, the United States and Angola have continued to maintain high-level dialogues and advance the objectives discussed by our leaders", highlighted Austin.

For the US Secretary of Defense, relations between Luanda and Washington have great potential for growth, including areas such as cybersecurity, as well as Angola's potential participation in the US State Partnership Program.

"And we remain grateful for Angola's willingness to consider US defense purchases", he pointed out.

Lloyd Austin also highlighted the "historic opportunity" to work with Angola to promote peace, security and responsible rules-based governance", stressing that the department he heads "looks forward to continued cooperation", while Angola restructures and modernizes its armed forces.
