State earns close to two million kwanzas per month with Asa Branca market

A total of 1,725,000 kwanzas is how much the State earns per month by collecting fees from users of cold storage rooms to preserve fish at the Asa Branca market, located in Cazenga. Izequiel João 'Pele', market administrator, explained that there are 115 refrigerated containers that are located in private backyards and are rented to fish sellers, who pay 15 thousand kwanzas each, per month, to the administration. Thus, after all, the charge amounts to a total of 1,725,000 kwanzas per month.

According to the person in charge, cited by Angop, the management of refrigerated containers (which are listed) is the responsibility of the owners who are responsible for renting them to sellers of frozen fish, who in turn make monthly tariff payments to the State.

The role of the market administration involves regularizing and supervising the commercial activity of fish, as well as creating conditions for sellers to carry out their activity and comply with the payment of fees to the State, said the administrator, adding that the management of the market is made by a management committee, responsible for responding to the purpose given to the rates collected per month.

Although the lack of space and conditions is not a problem, the person responsible ended up regretting the fact that there are still people who persist "in selling products in prohibited places on public roads, taking all the risks".

Thus, he added that the spaces are provided "at zero cost" to anyone who is interested, and they are only required to pay a daily fee of 150 kwanzas for site maintenance and the removal of solid waste by individuals, writes Angop.

The Asa Branca market, with four aisles and several open-air areas, is a reference in the sale of frozen fish, as well as used clothing.

The more than 110 cold rooms in this market are filled with fish from Benguela, Huíla, Namibe, Cuanza Sul (Porto Amboim) and Luanda.

Regarding fish prices – according to sellers, cited by Angop –, for example, 30 kilograms of horse mackerel is sold for 35,500 kwanzas, while a 15 kilogram box of cachucho costs 17,100 kwanzas, among others.

As for used clothing, another product very present in this market, prices range between 300 and 10 thousand kwanzas for all clothes, one of the sections that stands out most among those who pass by is wedding dresses. According to Maria Sebastião, one of the sellers in this segment, cited by Angop, several brides have passed through there, including public figures or "socially well-positioned and well-known women".
