President João Lourenço congratulated his Turkish counterpart on the electoral victory, expressing his willingness to deepen bilateral relations.

In the message addressed to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the head of state underlined that the re-election is the “reaffirmation of confidence” of the Turkish people in the “deep reach of the policies” that have been carried out “with visible successes, aimed at building and consolidating a prosperous and developed Turkish nation".

The President also expressed the desire to see the two governments "committed to the continuous deepening of bilateral relations" in the next term of office of the Turkish counterpart.

Erdogan won 52.1 percent of the vote on Sunday, beating Social Democrat Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, who won 47.9 percent in the second round of Sunday's Turkish presidential election after 99.5 percent of the votes were counted, according to the local Electoral Commission.

In front of his supporters, the head of state, who has been in power for 20 years, assured that he will fulfill "all the promises made to the people" and stressed that each election is "a rebirth".

"Our nation has entrusted us with the responsibility of governing the country for the next five years," Erdogan said in front of an enthusiastic crowd outside his Istanbul residence.

For his part, opponent Kemal Kiliçdaroglu expressed sadness for Turkey's future.

"I am deeply saddened by the difficulties the country is facing," said the defeated candidate and leader of Turkey's main opposition party, speaking at his party headquarters in Ankara after Erdogan's re-election.
