Third term with us will not happen, says Adalberto da Costa Júnior

The UNITA leader argued that the constitutional revision should bring "better opportunities" to Angolans instead of "invitations to institutional coups d'état", stressing that the party rules out the possibility of a third presidential term.

Adalberto da Costa Júnior was speaking at the inauguration of the new provincial secretary of the party in Luanda, Adriano Sapiñala, replacing Nelito Ekuikui, currently president of the youth branch of the party (JURA).

It should be remembered that UNITA won the MPLA for the first time in the capital, in the general elections held last year, which the ruling party won again, but with the worst result ever in its history.

The UNITA leader addressed recent statements by President João Lourenço to the French channel France 24 about a possible third term in 2027, in which the head of state replied that it was too early to speak, accusing João Lourenço of not being an “inclusive” president of all Angolans and to show attachment to power.

The Constitution provides for only two mandates, of five years each, and João Lourenço is currently serving the second, so a constitutional revision would be necessary to allow for a third.

“The revision of the Constitution must serve to bring about better opportunities, and not invitations to institutional coups d’état, which is what corresponds to this dream of those who begin to show attachment to power and do not measure consequences to continue defending the rights of half a dozen”, accused the UNITA leader, adding: "A third term with us will not happen".

Adalberto da Costa Júnior also said that "many" have shown concern for the use of defense and security forces in favor of partisan interests, despite believing that there is "political maturity" to remove this specter.

He also criticized the international community for allowing itself to be “deceived” in the face of Angola’s leadership and not showing sensitivity to the violation of human rights, despite some “courageous diplomatic representations that have given some space and attention to what is universal, which is the safeguard of life”, without identifying which ones.

According to the political leader, a program is underway to remove activists and supporters of UNITA, as well as to combat the party president.

He insisted that UNITA's objective continues to be the realization of local authorities and that these should not continue to be postponed under penalty of "continuing to postpone the development of Angola".

“Local authorities are the obligatory path for the development of the country”, he stressed.

On the other hand, he considered that the government is experiencing enormous difficulty in managing the country, which translates into “disenchantment” and that “essentially results from the lack of legitimacy of those sitting in the chair of power”.

Adalberto da Costa Júnior also spoke again about the “extreme crisis” of national justice, aiming above all at the “highest hierarchy of the State” that allows the continuity of the current president of the Supreme Court, despite the scandals around him and chose to renew the mandate of the Attorney General of the Republic, Helder Pitta Grós despite the fact that he was not the most voted among his peers.

“The crisis in justice must be overcome, because of this crisis that international businessmen are not investing in Angola, because there is no confidence, a country without justice does not attract, on the contrary, it pushes away”, he observed.
