Portuguese Environment Minister wants to share Portuguese experience in renewables

The Minister for the Environment and Climate Action said that he wanted to share with Angola the Portuguese experience in the field of renewable energies, noting that there was interest in knowing about projects that could eventually be replicated.

:

Duarte Cordeiro, who was speaking to Lusa, in Luanda, after the IX Meeting of Ministers of Environment of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), which took place on Friday in Lubango (Huíla province), said that the meeting was productive and made it possible to reaffirm international objectives and commitments that the countries of the organization have in common.

"It was an important moment to reaffirm certain aspects and projects in terms of boosting carbon markets in the various CPLP countries and exchanging experiences, particularly with Angola, in the area of waste, water and energy.

Angola, Portugal and other CPLP countries are among the countries with the highest percentage of electricity from renewable sources, a path that, he considered, has allowed Portugal to attract a set of industries linked to sustainable development and that Portugal is very interested in sharing with others CPLP countries.

In this context, Duarte Cordeiro invited the Angolan ministers of Energy, Water and Environment to visit Portugal at the end of this month to be able to see some of the projects that are being developed and that "it makes sense to reproduce in other countries" and added that they were also addressed aspects related to the visit that the Portuguese prime minister, António Costa, will make "soon" to Angola, without giving dates.

Among the projects he wants to make known, he pointed out return deposit systems, to remunerate citizens who return plastic or aluminum packaging, waste management systems (Lipor and Valorsul), water reuse and agricultural use and hydrogen production .

Angola is also developing a hydrogen project with German partners, involving the oil company Sonangol, an area that the minister stressed was "very important for the future".

The official said that the Government is receptive to "sharing experiences and investments involving its resources" and recalled that there are already Portuguese companies working in Angola in the area of renewables, namely in solar energy.

"There was interest in getting to know Portuguese companies and the work that is being developed and the possibility of being replicated in Angola", he said.

Regarding the decision to build a new airport in Lisbon, he underlined that the Government had already defined a methodology that included the constitution of a commission that will identify possible solutions, so it is necessary to wait.

"It is up to the commission to determine how it will study the possible locations, we have defined a process and we must follow it to the end", he stressed.
