Laúca provides 40 percent of the country's electricity

The Laúca Hydroelectric Facility – which has an installed capacity of 2,070 megawatts and whose construction work has already been completed – will be able to meet 40 percent of the country's energy demand, according to the President of the Republic.

According to a communiqué from CIPRA, to which VerAngola had access, João Lourenço – speaking to the press, last Friday, at the infrastructure located in Malanje – referred that the country is "very close" to reaching the 7000 megawatts, "nationally, in terms of electricity production".

The head of state also stated that the production of electricity in Angola "includes various sources, such as the Combined Cycle of Soyo, the dams of Cambambe, Capanda and, now, Laúca, together with the photovoltaic plants of Biópio, da Baía Farta and Caraculo, as well as thermal power stations in some provinces", reads the statement.

On the occasion, the President reiterated that the aforementioned infrastructure "alone manages to satisfy around 40 percent" of the country's energy demand. "I would like to say that today [Friday] is a day of great joy, if we take into account that here, from the Laúca Hydroelectric Plant, we came to conclude the works of this important energy infrastructure for our country. I say important, because it alone manages to satisfy around 40 percent of our country's energy consumption needs", he said, after confirming the conclusion of the infrastructure works in Laúca and having proceeded to unveil the sign of the ecological power plant of the same.

In addition, the head of state also took the opportunity to highlight the fact that the undertaking, "with six water intake units, 2.2 million cubic meters of excavation and 96 thousand cubic meters of concrete", was completely erected with ordinary Treasury resources, without recourse to any line of financing, adds the statement.

"This Laúca Dam was built with ordinary Treasury resources, which is an extraordinary situation. An investment of this magnitude is preferably to have a secure financing line. Unfortunately, this did not happen with Laúca. It was a very big financial effort for the country's treasury, but we have reached the end", he said, quoted in the note.

João Lourenço also made it known that the Government is looking for private investment (domestic and foreign) with a view to industrializing Angola.

"We want more industries, because they produce goods and services and provide a lot of employment. And there is no industry without energy. There is no industry without infrastructure, energy, water and access. Therefore, the energy problem is being solved and what should I do? to say is that the industry is currently behind the supply of energy", said the President.

Regarding the Caculo-Cabaça Dam, the head of state said that "if everything goes as planned" its inauguration will take place in 2026. "In principle, if everything goes well, especially with the issue of the financing line, it is very likely that we conclude Caculo-Cabaça in 2026", he added.

João Lourenço also guaranteed that the "energy problem in the country is being solved, but now he understands that it is necessary to invest in the transport of the electricity produced in the Cuanza Basin and in the home network of practically the whole country", reads the note.

Thus, he stressed: "We are no longer bad in terms of production, but we are still bad in terms of taking that production to consumers, whether with transport lines or with home networks".
