Covid-19: border between Angola and Namibia reopened after more than two years closed

The border between Angola and Namibia reopened this Wednesday, after more than two years closed due to the covid-19 pandemic, disclosed the Ministry of the Interior, which underlined the “large losses” that the economies of the two countries suffered.

:

"After more than two years of closure, which caused considerable damage to both economies, (...) the holder of the executive power, comrade President, João Lourenço, decided to reopen the border, through consultation with the Government of Namibia", highlighted the Minister of the Interior, Eugénio Laborinho, quoted in the statement released on the social network Facebook.

The formal act for the reopening, which took place in the Namibian town of Oshikango, on the border between the two countries, was also attended by the Namibian Minister of the Interior, Albert Kawana, and the Angolan ambassador to Namibia, Juvenil Imperial, among others.

In turn, the Namibian Interior Minister stressed that the reopening will solve "the problems of the stagnation of commercial transactions that have affected many Namibians who depend on border trade".

According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, the Namibian official also pointed out that Angola is "an indispensable partner" and that he intends to continue working to "safeguard excellent relations".

Albert Kawana also mentioned that he has "precise guidelines" from the President of Namibia [Hage Geingob] to "work with the Namibian special forces to not allow any weapons or ammunition to enter Angolan territory, nor any other situation capable of contributing to public disorder".
