UNITA advances with precautionary measure for “irregularities” in the electoral process

UNITA delivered a precautionary measure to the Constitutional Court (CC) for alleged “irregularities” in the electoral process, the political force announced in a statement.

:

According to the Communication and Marketing Secretariat of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the injunction was filed with the CC on May 6, "after the graceful avenues with the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MAT) had been exhausted", the entity responsible for the process "which does not admit the existence of irregularities".

Speaking to Lusa, UNITA spokesman Marcial Dachala said that the judicial route aims to enforce the law, after failing to reach an understanding at the last meeting between the political parties and the ministers of State and the head of the Civil House of the President of the Republic, Adão de Almeida, and of the Territory Administration, Marcy Lopes.

"Unfortunately, there was no clarification on the questions raised. Being aware that the irregularities detected constitute violations of citizens' rights, we only had this chance, to file a precautionary measure, so that the Constitutional Court can rule", he said.

At stake are several alleged irregularities such as the posting of the voter list, which the Angolan opposition parties claim, while the Government argues that the electoral law is being complied with, as the previous requirement has been revoked.

The next general elections in Angola, the fifth in the country's political history, are scheduled for the second half of August.

Fourteen million voters are registered to vote, according to the provisional computer file for older citizens handed over last week by the Government to the National Electoral Commission (CNE), but which may still undergo changes.
