Higino Carneiro free from trial after Supreme Court decision

The case concerning General Higino Carneiro, former Minister of Public Works, was shelved by the Supreme Court of Angola, leaving the latter free of trial.

Ampe Rogério:

According to Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), the supreme court made "the order to dismiss and close the case against Higino Carneiro", which clears the former minister of the various crimes he was accused of.

Higino Carneiro, Minister of Public Works between 2002 and 2010 and former governor of the provinces of Luanda, Cuando Cubango and Cuanza Sul, member of the MPLA Political Bureau and deputy of this political force, was on trial accused of crimes of embezzlement, nepotism, trafficking influence, criminal association and money laundering – the acts allegedly being committed between 2016 and 2017.

In September last year, the Attorney General of the Republic, Hélder Pitta Gróz, had announced that Higino Carneiro's case had gone to court.

The fight against corruption, impunity and nepotism is a priority stated by President João Lourenço, in power since September 2017.
