Covid-19: Police arrested nearly 1000 people for breach of rules

The police detained 929 citizens last week, mostly for violating the national health fence, and imposed 442 fines, which resulted in 9.2 million kwanzas being collected for the state.

Data on the fulfillment of the presidential decree on the situation of public calamity, presented this Wednesday in a press conference, referring to the period between the 5th and the 11th of May, reveal that more 340 citizens were arrested compared to the previous week.

During the reference period, 21,273 police activities were carried out, with a highlight to 11,878 awareness-raising activities in cities, neighborhoods, towns, musseques, among others, as well as the dispersion of agglomerations due to non-compliance with biosafety measures, with a greater incidence in Luanda, Benguela , Huambo, Bié and Huíla.

Among the 929 arrests, 745 for violation of the national sanitary fence, followed by the violation of the provincial sanitary fence (Luanda), with 86 detainees, and 23 for contempt of authority.

Of the police actions, 168 vehicle seizures are also highlighted, due to overcrowding, and 348 different means, with emphasis on 132 loudspeakers in the provinces of Luanda and Cabinda.

A total of 442 fines were imposed, of which 336 were for citizens who did not wear the mandatory protective mask, with a greater incidence in Luanda, Benguela, Huíla, Malanje and Huambo.

The balance indicates that 29 commercial establishments were temporarily closed for non-compliance with opening hours, with 57 people responsible for restaurants and the like being fined in that period.

Angola strengthened its measures to prevent and combat covid-19 due to the increase in cases this month, with the circulation of the English and South African variants.

The country has recorded 29,405 positive cases of covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 645 deaths, with 25,187 recovered, of which 3573 are active.
