Covid-19: Africa with 301 more deaths and 8746 new cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 301 more covid-19-associated deaths in the past 24 hours, for a total of 125,404 deaths since the pandemic began, and 8746 new cases, according to official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of cases is 4,660,301 and the number recovered in the last 24 hours was 8785, bringing the total to 4,219,117 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,997,901 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and 62,873 deaths associated with covid-19 disease. Within this region, South Africa, the country most affected by covid-19 on the continent, accounts for 1,602,031 cases and 54,968 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit area, with 1,404,563 infected and 41,747 deaths.

East Africa records 625,701 infections and 12,001 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 465,615 and the number of deaths 6145. In Central Africa, the infection cases amount to 166,521 and there are 2638 deaths recorded.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, records 14,091 deaths and 240,927 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 11,637 deaths and 324,103 cases of infection. Morocco accounts for 514,432 cases of infection and 9088 deaths associated with covid-19.

Also among the most affected countries are Ethiopia, with 3938 deaths and 264,367 infections, and Algeria, with 3350 deaths and 124,682 infected.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 826 deaths and 70,287 cases, followed by Angola (645 deaths and 29,405 cases of infection), Cape Verde (238 deaths and 27,029 cases), Equatorial Guinea (112 deaths and 7694 cases), Guinea-Bissau (67 deaths and 3739 cases) and Sao Tome and Principe (35 deaths and 2314 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 3,319,512 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 159.5 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by French news agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
