Covid-19: Africa with 355 more dead and 8426 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 355 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 124,789 since the start of the pandemic, and another 8426 new infections, again outpaced by the number of recovered, according to official data.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the 55 member states of the organization is 4,643,529 and that of those recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 10,202, to a total of 4,200,916 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,992,288 infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and 62,702 deaths associated with the covid-19 disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, accounts for 1,597,724 cases and 54,825 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,398,245 infected and 41,421 fatalities.

East Africa records 622,487 infections and 11,898 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 464,539 and that of deaths is 6131. ​​In Central Africa, cases of infection amount to 165,970 and there are 2637 registered deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 13,972 deaths and 238,560 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 11,468 deaths and 321,837 cases of infection. Morocco accounts for 513,922 cases of infection and 9077 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 3,897 fatalities and 263,120 infections, and Algeria, with 3,335 dead and 124,288 infected (a number that has remained since Saturday).

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique recorded 825 deaths and 70,240 cases, followed by Angola (636 deaths and 28,875 cases of infection), Cape Verde (235 deaths and 26,578 cases), Equatorial Guinea (112 deaths and 7694 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (67 dead and 3739 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 killed and 2314 cases).
