Doctors' union opposes the devaluation of the class

The National Union of Doctors of Angola (Sinmea) has condemned what it considers to be the government's devaluation of the country's medical class, compared to the 5,000 dollars salary given to Cuban professionals.

In a statement to which agency Lusa had access this Wednesday, Sinmea reacts to information provided by the Minister of Health, Silvia Lutucuta, that, on average, a Cuban doctor receives a monthly fee of five thousand dollars.

According to the union, "the salary that is given to the Cuban doctor is not much", considering that in this case, the executive "recognizes the real salary that a doctor should earn".

"It should be the same for the Angolan doctor," defends the union, appealing to all professionals of the class "totally damaged by the devaluation" to react and take all the decisions that are within their reach to restore legality.

"If necessary, we will convene an assembly in the near future to decide on a halt to our activities until they value us equally with the expatriate doctors", the note stresses, adding that the government, "if it has to pay the expatriates, it must also have to pay the genuine doctor".

In the document, the union recalls that many Angolan doctors were trained in Cuban universities, some of whom were even classmates with Cuban doctors, but the nationals have been waiting for more than a year for the results of the public examination, in which they took part by holding a test, in which they obtained marks below 10 and were on the verge of not being admitted to the national health system.

"Why not do the same to Cuban doctors", the union questions, bearing in mind that in Cuba "they studied in the same room".

"When the Angolan doctor is admitted to the civil service, he earns a meagre 300,000 kwanzas, with no residence, no means of transportation, and travels to work by taxi, without life insurance, without working conditions," complains the union.

Sinmea recalls that in the face of the covid-19 pandemic, all those who earn good wages were invited to stay at home, giving the doctors "just a beautiful name" of "front-line combatants".

"We risk our lives and our families to save those who don't care about our valuable and irreplaceable role in Angolan society," says the union, acknowledging that Cuban doctors are welcome in the country, admitting the shortage of national professionals.

"Sinmea has never been against their coming to our country. We defend equal treatment, just as we are equal in training", the communiqué stresses.
