Covid-19 has killed more than three thousand people in Africa

The death toll from covid-19 in Africa exceeded 3,000 this Friday, with more than 99,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the death toll has risen from 2997 to 3082, while those infected with the covid-19 virus have gone from 95,201 to 99,062.

The total number of recovered patients increased from 38,075 to 39,085.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease on the continent, with 1522 dead, and 31,232 infected with the covid-19.

West Africa has 578 deaths and 27,168 infections, while Southern Africa accounts for 389 deaths, having exceeded 20,000 cases (20,616), almost all concentrated in a single country, South Africa (19,137).

Six countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Ghana - concentrate about half of the infections by the new coronavirus in the continent and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (696) and more than 15 thousand cases (15,003), followed by Algeria, with 575 dead and 7728 infected.

South Africa is the third with more deaths (369), continuing to be the country in the continent with the most cases of covid-19, with 19,137 infected.

Morocco totals 196 fatalities and 7211 cases, Nigeria has 211 deaths and 7016 cases, while Ghana has 31 deaths and 6486 cases.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the most infections, with 1109 cases, and has six deaths.

Cape Verde has 356 infections and three deaths and São Tomé and Príncipe has 269 cases and 11 deaths.

Mozambique has 162 infected patients and Angola has 60 confirmed cases of covid-19 and three died.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 719 positive cases of infection and seven deaths for several days, according to Africa CDC.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa with positive infections, confirmed on 28 February.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed almost 330,000 deaths and infected more than five million people in 196 countries and territories.

More than 1.8 million patients were considered cured.
