Africa's death toll rises to 2336 in over 66,000 covid-19 cases

The death toll from covid-19 in Africa rose to 2336 on Tuesday, with more than 66,000 infected in 53 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the death toll has risen from 2290 to 2336, while those infected with covid-19 have gone from 63,325 to 66,373.

The total number of recovered patients increased from 21,821 to 23,095.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease, with 1277 dead and 23,022 infected with covid-19.

In West Africa there are 416 deaths and 19,566 infections, while Southern Africa accounts for 225 deaths and records 11,376 cases, almost all concentrated in a single country, South Africa (10,652).

The pandemic affects 53 of Africa's 55 countries and territories, with six countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Ghana - concentrating about half of the infections by the new coronavirus and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease .

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (533), in 9746 cases, followed by Algeria, which has 507 dead and 5891 infected.

South Africa has become the third most dead (206), continuing to be the continent's country with the most cases of covid-19 (10,652).

Morocco totals 188 fatalities and 6281 cases, Nigeria has 150 deaths and 4641 cases, while Ghana has 22 deaths and 4700 infected.

Only Lesotho and the Saharawi Republic continue to not report cases of covid-19.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the most infections, with 761 cases, and records three deaths.

Cape Verde has 260 infections and two deaths and São Tomé and Príncipe records 220 cases, having announced on Monday the sixth deadly victim.

Mozambique has 103 infected patients and Angola has 45 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two died.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 439 positive cases of infection and four deaths for several days, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 283,000 deaths and infected more than 4.1 million people in 195 countries and territories. Nearly 1.4 million patients were considered cured.
