"I would just like to say that they will take up duties in a court that has great responsibilities in the country," the head of state began, speaking at the ceremony.

"Just to mention, let's say, two major responsibilities of the court, namely: the fact that it is this court that swears in the president of the Republic when he is elected, and it is the court that, in all electoral processes, every five years, plays a very crucial role, which begins with the validation of candidacies and culminates with the validation of the elections themselves, including the assessment of any appeals that competing parties and candidates may eventually present", he added.

Therefore, the head of state asked the newly appointed women to take into account the importance of this body.

"Therefore, I ask that you take this into account: the importance of the organization to which you belong. But we have the guarantee that the choice was well made and that you will not disappoint the hopes of those who placed their trust in you," he said.

Finally, he wished everyone "great success in carrying out their duties" which begin this Thursday.

According to a statement from the Presidency of the Republic, to which VerAngola had access, the new judges were invested, "after being recently elected by the plenary of the National Assembly".

They are Emiliana Margareth Morais Nangacovie Quessongo and Amélia Augusto Varela.

"The solemn ceremony of inauguration of the two counselor judges took place in the Noble Hall of the Presidential Palace, in the presence of the President of the National Assembly and the presiding judges of the Superior Courts, as well as the Attorney General of the Republic. The Ministers of State and the Minister of Justice also took part in the event", the note also states.

Amélia Augusto Varela was nominated by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) to replace Judge Maria da Conceição Almeida Songo, who has completed her term in that court.

Emiliana Margareth Morais Nangacovie, a professor at the Catholic University of Angola and a former journalist, was nominated by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) to replace Judge Josefa dos Santos Neto, who has retired after turning 70.

The TC plenary is composed of 11 judges appointed from among jurists and magistrates, including four nominated by the President of the Republic, including the presiding judge, and four elected by parliament by a majority of 2/3 of the deputies in active service.

The Superior Council of the Judiciary elects two judges and another is selected by means of a selection process.

The judges of the Constitutional Court are appointed for a non-renewable seven-year term and enjoy guarantees of independence, irremovability and impartiality.
