The status of the cholera outbreak, carried out by the Ministry of Health, shows that in the last 24 hours two deaths and 220 new cases were recorded in the provinces of Benguela – the only one that reported deaths and with the highest number of infections (107) –, Cuanza Norte, Luanda, Malanje, Bengo, Icolo and Bengo, Cuanza Sul, Huíla, Zaire, Namibe and Cabinda.

In the last 24 hours, 269 people were discharged, but 1244 others remain hospitalized with cholera.

According to a note from the Ministry of Health, a technical meeting took place on Saturday in the province of Benguela, chaired by the provincial governor, Manuel Nunes Júnior, and attended by the head of the Health portfolio, Sílvia Lutucuta, and other government officials from the energy and water and Environment sectors, as well as representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

The working group aimed to evaluate ongoing actions, reinforce inter-institutional commitment and define new strategic guidelines for an effective response to the public health situation caused by the cholera outbreak.

The work day also included technical visits to various water supply points in the municipalities, communes and neighborhoods of the province, and Sílvia Lutucuta guided the reinforcement of the supply of drinking water, with priority given to the areas at greatest risk.

Expanding oral hydration points and improving pre-hospital and hospital care, mobilizing all social actors in promoting community actions and raising awareness about hygiene practices are other objectives of the governor.

The minister also guided the empowerment of communities in the management and conservation of installed infrastructure and coordination with the Ministry of the Environment for the construction of community latrines, using available local materials.

Benguela province is, after Luanda, the epicenter of the disease, and Bengo is the region with the highest number of deaths (70) and cases (2104), since the beginning of the outbreak.
