Angola had a 'brilliant' debut at the start of the African Judo Open, which began this Thursday, in Luanda. On the first day of the competition, dedicated to the junior ranks, the country won a total of 36 medals, of which 11 were gold, thus leading the league table. The Open takes place at the Kilamba Multipurpose Pavilion until Sunday, and is scheduled to return to Angola in the next two years, as the country will host this competition until 2026.

In addition to the 11 gold medals, the national team also won 10 silver medals and 15 bronze medals, making a total of 36 medals for Angola.

Right after Angola, Cameroon appears on the podium (three gold medals), while third place is occupied by Botswana (one silver medal), followed by Burundi (one bronze medal) and Paraguay (one bronze medal).

The African Judo Open is taking place at the Kilamba Multipurpose Pavilion until Sunday. This is the second time that the country hosts this competition, after debuting as host last year. However, Angola's 'hospitality' will not stop there: Josemar Frederido, vice-president of the Angolan Judo Federation, cited by Angop, informed that the country will host the Open of this sport until 2026, within the framework of a contract signed between the federation and the African Confederation of the sport.

Regarding the race underway since this Thursday, the official considered that he has a greater responsibility for qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, for which, so far, only Diassonema Neidy has qualified.

Among the fights held on Thursday, judoka Santos Sebastião stands out. In the -81 kilograms, the Angolan beat his opponent from Cameroon, Jessie Ngae, thus once again validating the title of champion of the African Judo Open in juniors.

Santos Sebastião beat his opponent with the maximum score, at a time when he was at a disadvantage with a two-card penalty, 23 seconds before the end of the match, writes Angop.

The highlight also fell on Eldimira Segunda's fight. The judoka preserved the title of African Open champion in the -48 kilograms category, after beating Vânia Gabriel, while in the women's -70 kilograms category Olga Bento overcame Neo Nagampe (Twanese).

According to Angop, Marcelina da Conceição was also in the spotlight, who won the gold medal after beating Beumara Pinha in the -52 kilograms category.

The test continues this Friday, on a day dedicated to the cadet category (from 17 years old and under).
