NGOs condemn attack against UNITA caravan that “tarnishes” reconciliation

National Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) condemned, this Tuesday, the attack on the UNITA caravan in the province of Cuando Cubango, considering that the act “tarnishes” the process of national reconciliation in the month of the 22nd anniversary of peace.

Omunga and Associação Mãos Livres, both defenders and promoters of human rights in the country, regretted what happened, precisely in the month in which Angola celebrated 22 years of peace and national reconciliation, on April 4, calling for dialogue.

In a note of repudiation, Mãos Livres strongly condemned the attack against the caravan of deputies from the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), which took place last Friday, saying that it could tarnish the process of national reconciliation.

The NGO urged the leadership of the National Assembly, the UNITA parliamentary group and the National Police of Cuando Cubango for public clarification "to prevent identical situations from occurring again".

For Associação Mãos Livres, whatever the reasons, "the best path is frank and open dialogue to heal the remnants of the past".

Cuando Cubango police confirmed the existence of four people injured in an attack on a caravan of UNITA deputies on Friday, but denied that the party had requested an escort from the authorities.

UNITA reported on Friday an attack on a caravan of deputies carrying out parliamentary work in that province, which resulted in one death and six injuries, information later corrected to nine injuries, five of which were seriously injured.

Omunga said she witnessed what happened with "great regret", noting that 22 years of peace and national reconciliation should mean peaceful coexistence among Angolans, respect for differences and respect for institutions.

According to this organization, the events of April 12th in Cuando Cubango are "unequivocal proof that Angolans are still not reconciled, despite so many attempts that in a certain way encouraged the path of national reconciliation".

"There is an urgent need for us all to work on the culture of peace among Angolans. The time has come to build a true democratic and lawful state", defended the NGO.

The perpetrators of the attack on the caravan of UNITA deputies and militants were allegedly militants of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), according to the leader of the UNITA parliamentary group, Liberty Chiyaka.

The MPLA separated itself from these actions, through the voice of its general secretary, Paulo Pombolo, who denied incitement to violence and political intolerance.

"The MPLA, due to its size, in fact, is the party of peace. It is we, the MPLA, who fought for this country to be pacified. We are the ones who put an end to the war", Paulo Pombolo told journalists, on the sidelines of the launch of the campaign "April of Peace, Love and Forgiveness-More Angola, More Citizenship", cited by Angop.
