Deputy Francisco Viana returns to join UNITA parliamentary group

The UNITA parliamentary group and deputy Francisco Viana signed an agreement, in which he rejoins the group, safeguarding his status as an independent citizen and politician.

Francisco Viana, elected deputy to the National Assembly within the scope of the United Patriotic Front (FPU), formed by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), recently wrote to the president of parliament, Carolina Cerqueira, to become an independent deputy.

However, this Friday, the deputy and the leader of the UNITA parliamentary group, Liberty Chiaka, signed a “parliamentary agreement”, in which they reiterate their political convergence and commit to having the same vote on certain matters to be discussed. discussed by the National Assembly.

In 2022, UNITA formed the United Patriotic Front (FPU), which includes members of the political project PRA-JA Servir Angola, coordinated by Abel Chivukuvuku, and the Democratic Bloc, led by Filomeno Vieira Lopes, and members of civil society.

It was through the FPU that deputy Francisco Viana, coordinator of the civic project Nova Angola Já, joined the UNITA list of deputies to the National Assembly, having recently requested his separation from the parliamentary group of the largest opposition party in order to be independent and in that capacity be able to develop its political activity.

In this agreement, Francisco Viana committed to concerting and agreeing the voting direction with the UNITA parliamentary group, in general and specialized debates, as well as in the final global vote on constitutional review laws and the national referendum, on the General Budget of the State, the General State Account and quarterly execution reports.

The voting direction must be the same for laws linked to State reform, electoral legislation and the municipal legislative package, as well as bills initiated by the UNITA parliamentary group, requests on legislative initiatives, parliamentary commissions of inquiry, resolutions and votes that respect the party’s program “and the freedom of conscience and right to conscientious objection of deputies”.

“Deputy Francisco Viana undertakes to join the UNITA parliamentary group, safeguarding his status as an independent citizen and politician, and coordinator of the civic project – Nova Angola Já – as well as taking a seat in one of the seats reserved for the UNITA parliamentary group ( …)”, indicates the agreement.

According to UNITA, this agreement is the reaffirmation of the vision, values and principles of unity in diversity, inclusion and the primacy of participatory citizenship, as well as a “result of the genuine will” of the management of UNITA and the FPU, represented by its leadership, and deputy Francisco Viana.
