United Kingdom interested in working “very directly” on the development of the Lobito Corridor

The Lobito Corridor caught the attention of the United Kingdom, which expressed interest in working “very directly” with Angola on the development project for the aforementioned corridor. The Minister of State for Climate, Food Security and Rural Development of the United Kingdom, Richard Benyon, conveyed this intention of the British government to the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, this Monday, in a meeting that the two held at the Presidential Palace, in capital.

According to a statement from CIPRA, to which VerAngola had access, the British minister, as special envoy of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, said that he is in the country to ensure that "bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Angola".

On the occasion, he also expressed the "great admiration" he has for the President of the Republic and his Executive because of "their efforts to achieve peace in eastern Congo".

Thus, he recognized João Lourenço's "leadership and sense of state" so that the war could come to an end and peace could be achieved. "I was recently in Congo and my colleagues visited Rwanda. But I wanted to come here to tell President João Lourenço how grateful we are for his leadership and sense of state so that this war ends and a meaningful path to peace is found", pointed.

On the other hand, he mentioned "the pride" of having Non-Governmental Organizations, namely The Halo Trust, supporting Angola's demining program, so that it becomes the first mine-free country in the world.

Also this Monday, the head of state also held an audience with the special envoy of the president of Kenya, Charles Keter, which was dominated by the peace process in the Republic of South Sudan.

Charles Keter said that the meeting served to present to João Lourenço "a report on the peace process in South Sudan, which formally begins next week in the Republic of Kenya", says another statement from CIPRA, to which VerAngola had access.

Thus, he highlighted that "there is now a revitalized 2018 peace agreement in the Republic of Kenya. And it is this agreement that is in the implementation phase and will end at the end of this year".

It was in this sense, said the official, that the president of South Sudan asked his Kenyan counterpart to "lead the negotiation process between the coalition Government and the forces that were not signatories to the previous agreement that formed the Government".
