Balance of victims of rains in Angola rises to 332 in seven months

The authorities have revised upwards the number of deaths as a result of the rains in Angola, which increased to 332, between August 15, 2022 and April 21, 2023.

At least 649 people were injured, 4292 homes were damaged, 3827 homes were destroyed, 1741 were flooded and 18,860 families were affected.

The update of data on rainfall, which has been falling heavily in recent weeks in Angola, was carried out at the end of the meeting of the Multisectoral Protection Commission chaired by the Minister of State for Social Affairs, Dalva Ringote.

The Government announced, on Friday, that at least 308 people died due to the rains, between August 2022 and April 2023, having affected more than 13 thousand families.

Manuel Lutango, member of the executive secretariat of the National Civil Protection Commission, and spokesperson for the meeting, said that the emergency plan contains short, medium and long-term measures.

"It is a response action plan, the emergency plan consists of the action of responses that need to be consolidated to support the affected populations, this plan also foresees measures to be applied in the short, medium and long term", he said .

Without advancing the amount for the expenses of the emergency plan, the official said that the provincial civil protection commissions "serve as a fundamental basis for providing concrete data on the people affected and beneficiaries of the multisectoral response".

From this meeting, continued Manuel Lutango, guidelines were also issued for an "immediate and emerging" response and the intention to update the national contingency plan. "Because that contingency plan always generates a plan of actions and/or responses for the victims", he noted.

"The intended response is multisectoral, such as clearing water, distribution of food, reinforcement of shelters, distribution of first-need kits and other factors identified by the commission", he assured.

Most of the provinces have rains, but the province of Huambo was the one with the highest number of fatalities, 54 in total, from the beginning of the rainy season in August 2022 to April 2023.

Regarding the capital, Luanda, which last week recorded heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning, the authorities continue to survey the damage, with preliminary data pointing to more than 10 deaths.
