The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report, consulted by Lusa, focuses on demographic indicators and reproductive and sexual health in two hundred countries and regions, predicting that the world population will exceed eight billion people in 2023.

According to the same document, two-thirds of the world's population live in regions where fertility rates have fallen below the so-called replacement level of 2.1 births per woman, with a world average of 2.3.

However, this trend is contradicted by African countries that are at the top of fertility, especially Niger, which tops the list with 6.7 births per woman.

Then, with 6.1, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chad, tied in second place, the Central African Republic and Mali in third, with 5.8 births per woman and Angola and Nigeria in fourth position.

Angola also has a high percentage of young people, with 45 percent of the population aged between 0 and 14 years old (25 percent globally), while only 3 percent of Angolans are over 65 years old (10 percent on average worldwide).

The report also assesses the speed at which the population is doubling, which in the case of Angola will happen every 23 years (76 worldwide).

With regard to sexual and reproductive health, UN indicators point to a low prevalence of contraceptive use in 2023 among women between 15 and 49 years old: 17% compared to the world average of 50%.

However, with regard to laws and regulations that guarantee access to sexual and reproductive health care, Angola is in line with the world average (62 and 76 percent, respectively), but well below service coverage rates. health (39 compared to 68 percent).
