Inocência Pinto was the most voted name for PGR. Pitta Groz was second

The name of Inocência Pinto was the most voted to fill the position of Attorney General of the Republic, with 11 votes in favour, followed by the current Attorney General, Helder Pitta Gróz, who obtained 10 votes, as did Deputy Attorney Mouta Liz.

The election results were presented by the president of the Electoral Commission of the Superior Council for the Magistracy of the Public Ministry (CSMMP), Arcanjo Custódio, who announced the three candidates for the positions of Attorney General of the Republic and Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, who will be presented to the President of the Republic.

Of the 10 pre-candidates approved by the Electoral Commission, one ended up giving up, informed the same official, indicating that the withdrawal was "voluntary" and "there was no kind of physical and moral pressure".

Among the names admitted was the current attorney general, Pitta Gróz, who had resigned from his position in December 2022, but ended up running again to the “complete surprise” of his peers who learned of the decision a few hours before the Electoral Commission approve the names for filling these positions on Friday.

It will now be up to the President of the Republic to choose, in a discretionary way, two names, one for Attorney General and the other for Deputy Attorney, which means that the most voted may not be chosen by João Lourenço.

“These are positions of political trust of the President of the Republic. He is discretionary, he is not bound to nominate the most voted, he can nominate the first, who had the most votes, or the second who had the least votes and could even nominate a third”, he said at the end of the voting.

The Electoral Commission will now proceed with the preparation of the minutes and submit the results for approval and homologation by the CSMMP, the body for disciplining and managing public prosecutors.

The names will be sent to the chief executive when the plenary proceeds with their approval “within two days”, but there is no defined period of time for the President of the Republic to proceed with the appointment of these entities.

Arcanjo Custódio said that the competitors, both members of the CSMMP and external ones, were asked if they would be interested in contesting any of the acts and “all of them manifested themselves in the sense that the elections were free, fair and transparent and there is no reason for there to be a complaint of any type".
