Inflation stands at 15.18 percent and overall at 1.21 percent in March

Inflation recorded a decrease of 15.92 percentage points in March this year compared to the same period of 2022, standing at 15.18 percent, according to the Wholesale Price Index (IPG), released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE ), which also reveals that last month's global inflation (in terms of monthly variation between February and March of this year) was 1.21 percent.

"The year-on-year variation in March stands at 15.18 percent, registering a drop of 15.92 percentage points in relation to that observed in the same period of the previous year", says the IPG, which also adds that the "trend of variation homologous in the last three years until the month of March is increasing, reversing its direction from April 2022".

In monthly terms, the document reveals that the variation in the period from February to March 2023 was 1.21 percent. "The Wholesale Price Index registered a monthly variation, in the period from February to March 2023, was 1.21 percent, being 0.03 percentage points higher than that recorded in the previous period and 0.98 percentage points lower in relation to the registered in the same month of the year 2022", reads in the INE document.

According to the IPG, imported products were the ones that most contributed to this small increase, with 0.72 percentage points. "Global inflation for the month of March 2023 was 1.21 percent, with imported products contributing the most with 0.72 percentage points, i.e. 59 percent, and domestic products with 0.49 percentage points, the which corresponds to 41 percent of global inflation", says INE.

Regarding the variation of national products, the index reveals that, during the past month, the prices of national products increased by 1.92 percent compared to February, with the 'Manufacturing Industries' section "which recorded the greatest price increase" (1.94 percent).

"The products that had the greatest price variation in this group were the following: offal with 4.17 percent, beer with 3.81 percent, corn flour with 3.34 percent, frozen horse mackerel with 3.22 percent, wheat flour with 2.78 percent, goat meat with 2.57 percent, beef with 2.52 percent, smoked catfish with 2.46 percent, wine with 2.34 percent, dried horse mackerel with 2.33%, brandy 2.24%, gin 2.05%, mineral water with 2.03 percent, pork meat 1.63 percent, carbonated 1.56 percent, coffee roasted with 1.51 percent and dried meat with 1.50 percent, among the main ones", says the IPG.

Regarding the variation of imported products, still in the period in reference, the prices of imported products increased by 0.96 percent compared to the previous month, "influenced by the variation in prices verified" in the section of 'Agriculture, Animal Production, Hunting and Forestry' (1.23 percent).

"The products that most increased in prices were the following: onions with 2.23 percent, reindeer potatoes with 1.68 percent, eggs with 1.60 percent, grain corn with 1.59 percent, cabbage with 1.49 percent, garlic 1.32 percent, tomato 1.10 percent, ginger and apple 1.00 percent each, carrots 0.77 percent, pears 0.67 percent, lemon with 0.62 percent and brown beans with 0.59 percent, among the main ones", reads the index.
