Balance of fatalities of rain in Luanda rises to 24, including nine children

The balance of the victims of Monday's torrential rains in Luanda increased to 24 dead, nine of whom are children, according to updated data from the spokesman for the Provincial Civil Protection Commission.

Speaking to Radio Nacional de Angola (RNA), spokesman Faustino Minguens said there were 24 dead, including nine children.

Of the total number of fatalities, 10 lived in the municipality of Cacuaco, five in the municipality of Luanda, three in Viana, and an equal number in the municipalities of Cazenga and Kilamba Kiaxi.

There are also three injuries and material damage: 2,289 flooded homes, 60 collapsed houses, 14 flooded schools, two bridges partially destroyed and four others flooded, 58 fallen trees and four flooded health centers, as well as the overflow of nine basins. retention.

2,349 families were affected, for a total of 11,745 people.

Faustino Minguens said that the meeting discussed the need to ensure support from municipal commissions for families affected by the rains.

In a statement released after the meeting, through its page on the social network Facebook, the Provincial Government of Luanda stressed that support is being given to bereaved families, to whom the governor of Luanda "returns the most heartfelt condolences".

Joana Lina "left express recommendations to the municipal administrators, as coordinators of the municipal commissions, in order to continue to give all support to the affected families, with the intention of minimizing the difficulties they face".

On Tuesday, several residents of the neighborhoods most affected by the floods, heard by Lusa, asked the authorities to help them not to go back to sleep in the open, fearing the worst if it rained again.

More than seven hours of heavy rain launched chaos in the capital on Monday, with floods that flooded neighborhoods, destroyed bridges, houses and infrastructure, killed 24 people and left thousands homeless.
