Sons of Savimbi thanked João Lourenço for his support in Cidade Alta

This Friday, President João Lourenço received, in audience, six children of Jonas Savimbi, founder of UNITA, who went to thank the head of state for supporting the transfer of his father's remains to Lopitanga.

"The descendants of Savimbi went to Cidade Alta to personally express their thanks to the head of state for his direct action in the process of transferring his father's remains", according to a presidency note, published on his official website. Facebook.

Speaking to the press, Durão Sakaita Savimbi, the oldest of Savimbi's 30 children, said the meeting served to show his appreciation for the President.

"The person who had the political courage, openness and humanity to close this process, which culminated in the return of our father's remains to the family, was the President of the Republic, João Lourenço," said Durão Sakaita Savimbi, quoted by the newspaper of Angola.

UNITA's historic leader, Jonas Savimbi, was killed in combat by government armed forces on February 22, 2002, in Lucusse commune, Moxico province, and his body buried in Luena, the provincial capital.

The remains of the head of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) were kept by the Government, deposited since 2002 in the municipal cemetery of Luena (province of Moxico), having been officially recovered by the family on May 31, 2019 in Andulo.

More than 10,000 people gathered, on June 1, 2019, for a final farewell to Jonas Savimbi, in a religious ceremony that took place in the homeland of the parents of the co-founder of the "black cock party", Lopitanga, in the province of Bié.
