Covid-19: Africa with 308 more dead and 12,463 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 308 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 118,849 since the start of the pandemic, and 12,463 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the 55 member states of the organization is 4,460,119 and that of those recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 11,770, the total having exceeded four million (4,003,249) since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,948,128 infected and 61,530 dead associated with contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, has 1,569,935 cases and 53,940 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,330,672 infected and 38,410 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 581,392 infections and 10,610 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 452,309 and that of deaths is 5958. In Central Africa there are 147,618 cases of infection and 2341 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 12,866 deaths and 218,902 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 9993 deaths and 291,833 cases of infection. Morocco records 507,338 cases of infection and 8969 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are Ethiopia, with 3474 fatalities and 246,484 infections, and Algeria, with 3172 dead and 120,174 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique recorded 805 deaths and 69,437 cases, followed by Angola (570 deaths and 24,883 cases of infection), Cape Verde (198 deaths and 21,179 cases), Equatorial Guinea (106 deaths and 7505 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (66 deaths and 3713 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 deaths and 2288 cases).
