Covid-19: Africa with 254 more dead and 10,358 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded an additional 254 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 114,598 since the start of the pandemic, and 10,358 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the 55 member states of the organization is 4,301,375 and that of those recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 9668, to a total of 3,868,129 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 1,919,820 infected and 60,471 dead associated with contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, records 1,553,609 cases and 53,111 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,273,444 infected and 36,600 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 529,545 infections and 9504 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 440,134 and that of deaths is 5782. Central Africa accounts for 138,432 cases of infection and 2241 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 12,290 deaths and 207,293 infected, following Tunisia, with 9087 deaths and 264,994 cases of infection. Morocco registers 499,688 cases of infection and 8867 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are Algeria, with 3116 dead and 117,912 infected, and Ethiopia, with 3058 fatalities and 221,544 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 785 deaths and 68,292 cases, followed by Angola (547 deaths and 23,010 cases of infection), Cape Verde (174 deaths and 18,214 cases), Equatorial Guinea (104 deaths and 7059 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (66 deaths and 3663 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 deaths and 2255 cases).
