Covid-19: Africa with 235 more dead and 9695 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 235 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 114,083 since the start of the pandemic, and 9695 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the organization's 55 member states is 4,280,598 and that of those recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 33,269, to a total of 3,846,126 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 1,917,633 infected and 60,329 dead associated with contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, has 1,552,416 cases and 52,995 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,264,562 infected and 36,392 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 521,962 infections and 9,364 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 438,628 and that of deaths is 5763. Central Africa accounts for 137,813 cases of infection and 2,235 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 12,210 deaths and 205,732 infected, followed by Tunisia, which overcame Morocco, with 8993 deaths and 261,177 cases. Morocco records 498,329 cases of infection, but a lower number of deaths than the Tunisian record, of 8857 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are Algeria, with 3108 dead and 117,647 infected, and Ethiopia, with 3000 fatalities and 217,327 infections.

Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique recorded 782 deaths and 68,227 cases, followed by Angola (543 deaths and 22,717 cases of infection), Cape Verde (173 deaths and 17,939 cases), Equatorial Guinea (104 deaths and 7059 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (66 deaths and 3662 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 deaths and 2244 cases).
